Label Machine Glossary
Practical glossary of label making machine terms for buyers comparing printing, die cutting, slitting, rewinding and finishing equipment.
Common Terms
Web guiding
A sensor and actuator system that keeps the roll material aligned as it moves through the machine.
Tension control
Control of web pull between unwind, processing and rewind sections to prevent stretch, wrinkles and drifting.
Matrix removal
The process of stripping waste material around die-cut labels after cutting.
Rotary die cutting
Continuous die cutting using a rotary cylinder or flexible die.
Flatbed die cutting
Cutting with a flat die and press movement, often useful for thicker or specialty materials.
Laser die cutting
Tool-free digital cutting using a laser path instead of a physical die.
Slitting
Cutting a wide roll into narrower rolls using razor, shear or crush slitting.
Rewind diameter
The outside diameter of the finished roll after rewinding.
Registration
Alignment between printed artwork and die cutting or additional printing stations.
Roll direction
The orientation of labels on the finished roll, important for automatic labeling machines.
