Label UV Curing Problems
Under-cured ink rubs off, over-cured ink yellows, and both come from lamp power, dose and ink film, not the ink chemistry alone.
Quick Answer
UV ink cures when the lamp delivers enough energy at the right wavelength to polymerize the ink film. Under-cure leaves the ink soft and it rubs off; over-cure can yellow or embrittle the film. The fix is matching lamp power and dose to the ink film, substrate and speed.
Material Analysis
- Ink film thickness: a thicker ink film needs more UV energy to cure through.
- Substrate: film and coated paper reflect or absorb UV differently.
- Ink chemistry: photoinitiators and pigment loading change cure response.
Root-Cause Principle
UV curing needs enough energy dose, the product of lamp power and exposure time, at the right wavelength. When the lamp is aged or too far away, or the line runs too fast, the ink does not fully polymerize and stays soft. When dose is excessive, the ink and substrate can yellow or become brittle.
Solutions
UV Curing Mechanism
Prevention Checklist
- Track lamp hours and replace on schedule
- Confirm lamp distance for the substrate
- Run at a speed that gives a full cure
- Run a rub or tape test on first samples
FAQ
Why does UV ink rub off after printing?
The ink is under-cured, usually because the lamp dose is too low from an aged lamp, wrong distance or high speed.
Why does the label yellow after UV curing?
Over-curing or excessive UV dose can yellow the ink or substrate, especially on white and clear film.
Does ink film thickness affect curing?
Yes. A thicker ink film needs more UV energy to cure all the way through.
How do I know if curing is complete?
Run a rub or tape test on a sample. A fully cured ink resists rubbing and does not transfer.
What information should I send before asking for help?
Send the ink type, substrate, lamp type and hours, speed and whether the defect is under-cure or yellowing.
